The vision of a ‘Cloud OS’ or hybrid cloud model that spans the public cloud, hosting partners and your own data centres took a big step forward with the release of Windows Server 2012 R2 last week.

In addition to upgrades to Windows Azure to support the new OS when running your applications on Azure, the operating system enables new scenarios where you host it yourself or with a hosting partner.

With the addition of the (free) Windows Azure Pack, you can now add an Azure Management Portal interface over cloud services running on your own servers that offers the same Virtual Machine, Service Bus and Web Sites services as Azure, but hosted on your own kit.

For clients who like the model and simplicity of Azure, but have a requirement for closer control of the underlying kit (or need it to be in the UK) this cleans up a lot of the roadblocks to Azure.
